For Hiram Durán, a Chicano visual journalist from El Paso-Ciudad Juárez, “the freedom to form visuals led by the interests of Latino and Mayan communities, makes the CatchLight/Report for America fellowship at El Tímpano stand out as one of the most inspiring opportunities in photojournalism.”
Over a monthlong project, Hiram Durán made more than 75 portraits at the Coliseum Swap Meet, an open air market in Oakland known affectionately as "La Pulga." His work shows how vital it is as a place for community gathering, small businesses, family entertainment, and affordable goods.
Like flea markets throughout the country, Coliseum Swap Meet, an open-air market known affectionately as “La Pulga” in East Oakland, is a reflection of the community it serves.
